The Kiwanis Club of LaBelle and South West Florida PODS Angels are sponsors of a unique project, the AKtion Club of LaBelle. Which is the really neat service organization, one of the only organizations available for adults with disabilities. The club’s motto is: “Where development has no disability.” They are a club that is committed to a vision of “developing competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service” and a mission to “provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills and to serve their communities.”

My family and I recently met these gleefully, service-oriented people in front of the Kiwanis Thrift Store, where they had gathered day-old baked goods from local bakeries to hand out to anyone who passed by, eliminating waste while also making everyone smile. When asked what kinds of things they are working on, Mary Beth Lequia Nunley-Pringle had plenty to tell us, “Our focus is providing a place for those who have no place in LaBelle. During the day it will be a day program for adults with disabilities who are no longer in school. They will come to learn life skills to get a job, live independently, cooking, clean and do social activities otherwise not available to them. This will give the caregivers in this area a break to care for their own needs. This is a program paid through a waiver program through our state called Medwaiver. So families can apply to have no expense to have their loved one attend. We have supported living coaches so we can help the adult gain independence to live on their own. We have Job coaches to help all get paid employment. Some we get creative and they start their own business called micro enterprise. All these supports and services are occurring throughout the state and we want the citizens in LaBelle to have the same opportunity.”

She added, “Too many adults 22 years old and older in LaBelle are sitting at home every day because they do not have anything to do. We go bowling, swim, movies, dances, learn about weather current events, we VOTE each of them is a registered voter and we travel to Tallahassee to meet and share needs. Their staff went with them. THEY HAVE A VOICE in our government. They are voters.” There is so much wonderful stiff going on with this group, than I can even begin to write about here. So, where can you learn more about the AKtion Club of LaBelle and how to get involved? “Oh, if you pop into the court house they put up a display by the tax office on their program to help gain more members,” says Mary Beth Lequia Nunley-Pringle.

Also, she mentioned, “Our big event is September 21st. We could use the support. We bought the building not knowing all the repairs (new roof, new AC), we knew we were up for the challenge, just a bigger mountiain than we had initially planned for. Tickets are $15 for dinner and live band “Deb and the Dynamics” will be there.”

Let’s welcome and support this awesome group. They are doing awesome things for LaBelle. To purchase event tickets or for more information please call (239)872-4778.
