Cleanses can be positive

There has been a fad in the last decade within the realm of health and wellness called the “cleanse”. I’m sure you have heard of it, in at least one of its incarnations, and maybe have even taken part in a few yourself.

There are weight loss cleanses, energy cleanses, gallbladder cleanses, cleanses for the metabolism, cleanses for better skin, and I’m sure that if you spent any time on Google you could find a cleanse for just about any malady you may be facing in your current life experience.

I am not opposed to these cleanses, in fact; I believe setting a strong intention or desire followed by inspired and reasonable activity (which is what a cleanse calls you to do) is a great way to kick start any program or change you wish to see in your life. What I would love to see, however, is the implementation of a new type of cleanse; a cleanse that isn’t necessarily so dependent on what types of foods or liquids we eat or drink and one that focuses more on the content we ingest.

I would love to see a cleanse that limits our intake of mindless television, cute and funny (and time consuming) cat videos on YouTube, gossip driven social media, and for goodness sake limit the amount of news we take in. (This one will always elicits a defensive response with die hard news watchers. I’m not saying it’s bad to stay INFORMED but I’m encouraging you to not let that lead to becoming INUNDATED. The news programs themselves can sometimes breed negativity that can weigh one down vibrationally and can lead to all sorts of unhappiness.)

My challenge for us this week is to start to watch the intake of what we allow into our minds. Instead of watching the news or checking our social media first thing when we wake up maybe do a ten minute guided meditation, or read ten pages of a good book. Perhaps listen to a good book on audio on the way home from work, or instead of binge watching a reality tv show pop in a good socially responsible documentary. Let the things we fill our minds with be nourishing to our souls and conduits to a life filled with happiness and gratitude rather than things that cause us to focus on the unjust and unrest in our social and political climate. Let’s try this for a week and see if we can see a difference in our general state of happiness and well being.
