Last week I introduced the first in a series of five “Hunting Happiness” issues concerning the things that I learned throughout Hurricane Irma. I was inspired to put these things to writing in the form of “5 Sutras to weather any storm” that can be applied to the ‘storms’ that come and go in our own lives.
The first sutra that I wrote about last week was True Power comes from within. When you’ve lost your ability to connect to the outside world your ability to connect within is amped up.
This week’s topic is Let your roots grow so strong and deep that the winds of erratic energy cannot uproot you.
Just like boarding up our windows is important during a category 5 Hurricane it’s also important to board up your energy field when weathering any storm that comes into our lives.
Storms come in many different forms; disagreement, depression, divorce, health issues, etc. and with those storms come a lot of erratic energy and emotions that can knock us flat off of our feet if we aren’t rooted with a strong foundation.
I have written before about protecting your energy in your daily practice and today I’m going to expound on that. It is extremely important to establish a practice that allows you to tune in and find your footing daily to ground yourself for whatever the day may bring, but we must take this even further when preparing for a life storm (something that presents more stressors, emotional rollercoasters, and freak out moments than the average day).
We need to not only ‘board up our windows’ by surrounding ourselves with as many options for security as possible but we also need to make sure that we are boarding up windows on a structurally sound foundation!
One of my favorite spiritual teachers, Jordan Bach, says that we need to become so strong in establishing our energy when we are aligned with love, compassion, grace, and our best selves that we cannot be shaken or moved when presented with a circumstance that may cause us to waver.
Imagine yourself like a large tree that has an impenetrable root system that even category 5 force hurricane winds cannot uproot you.
How do I do this?
Last week, I mentioned how during the hurricane I was inspired to go within and hone that true power that we all have access to through prayer and meditation. By creating a daily practice of prayer and meditation (or whatever it is that you do to connect to your truth) you are in fact creating a strong foundation. When the storms are headed your way you’ll want to take extra steps to ensure you maintain your alignment with peace, happiness, joy and bliss. I suggest finding things that help bring you back into your flow and anchor you there.
I have several anchors that bring me back to a feeling of center; my zen-zone. Some of my anchors are songs that instantly bring me back to peace, or a beaded bracelet that my dear friend and mentor gave to me, or a book that by simply reading a passage from can bring me away from the craziness of the current circumstance and return me to the foundation of love that I’ve established through my daily devotional practices. These are the things that I board myself up with to remind me of who I truly am when the outside world brings conditions that may knock me off kilter.
What do you do to anchor yourself into your center of peace when storms threaten to rock your world? I’d love to hear from you so email me with any questions or to share your practice with me.
