Kids BBQ Championship was back for its second season on the Food Network on Monday, May 1 at 8 p.m., with more kid grill masters including LaBelle native Taylor Sanders. Sanders is the daughter of Jessica (Skinner) Blair and granddaughter to LaBelle’s Jerry Skinner. The show is co-hosted by Damaris Phillips and Eddie Jackson. The contestants were surprised by the appearance of guest judge Diva Q, the Queen of Barbeque. In every episode four young chefs enter the outdoor ranch kitchen for two challenges. The winner of each episode takes home a prize of $10,000.
The main ingredient that had to be used for the episode in which our young Chef Taylor was competing was pork, and for the first round, their challenge was to have one food prepared wrapped in bacon and another food stuffed with bacon.
Set against three other young cooks, Taylor set out in making her first dish which consisted of Bacon and smoked Gouda stuffed beef sliders, bacon wrapped scallops, and cast iron corn and bacon. After a nail biting first round the judges critiqued Taylor’s dish for not having enough salt, but even so, they loved her presentation and said that all of the other components of the dish were spot on, and she made the cut for the second round. In the following phase of the competition only three competitors were left and the final winner of the week was selected after their second and final offering to the judges. Taylor presented, for her next dish, a grilled pork chop with a cherry and dried apricot Gastrique, bacon and Brussels sprouts and a side of Lardons with an Asian Barbecue Sauce.
If the first round of competition was a nail biter, the second was down right nerve racking. After what seemed like ages in this only thirty minute episode the time finally came when they would announce the winner of the this week’s Kids BBQ Championship and the $10,000 prize. After all was said and done Taylor Sanders took the title as this weeks winner of BBQ glory and, of course, the money prize.
Taylor said “The whole experience was absolutely amazing. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had, but it was a little bit nerve racking having cameras everywhere you look when you’re trying to cook!”
There will be a replay of the episode on the Food Network on Saturday May 6th. Check your tv for local listing times!
