LHS Class of 2020 top five Honor Graduates

LaBelle High School(LHS) is pleased to announce this year’s Class of 2020 Valedictorian, Sarah Sodrel, and Salutatorian, Sadie Gaskins. Top 5 Honor graduates also include Yuliances Fernandez, Abel Cornejo-Jaramillo, and Marisabel Ortiz.

Sarah Sodrel, Valedictorian is ranked number 1 of 348 students and has a weighted GPA of 5.12. She has completed 111 community service hours.

As a member of the LHS Varsity volleyball team for four years, Sarah served as the Captain for three years. She tied the school record for number of assists (40) in a single game in her sophomore year and broke the school record this year with 42 assists. Her additional leadership experiences include graduating from the Hendry/Glades Youth Leadership Program and holding the position of President for the United States Youth Team Penning Association. She is a multiple-time world champion in team penning and ranch sorting. Sarah is currently attending Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the Accelerated Collegiate Experience (ACE) for high school students, where she is on track to graduate from the program. Her plans are to continue at FGCU, where she will start the fall semester as a junior in the FGCU Honors program majoring in Business Management. She has also been hired by FGCU to work as a mentor for future students attending the ACE program. Sarah is an active member of the First Christian Church and volunteers with their meal program called the Disciples’ Diner. She would like to acknowledge that without God and the support of her family and friends – none of her accomplishments would have been possible. Sarah’s parents are Noah and Tammy Sodrel.

Sadie Gaskins, Salutatorian is ranked number 2 of 348 students and has a weighted GPA of 4.79. She has completed 140 community service hours.

Sadie has been a member of the LHS Cowboy Marching Band for four years. She has held the leadership positions of: Drum Major (2019-2020), Band Captain and Woodwind Captain (2018-2019), and Alto Saxophone Section Leader (2017-2018). Sadie received a Superior rating for alto saxophone solo at the Solo and Ensemble Music Festival in 2017 and a Superior rating for saxophone quartet in 2020. She has participated in several honor bands including the Heartland Honor Band (2017 through 2020), Nine Star Honor Band (2017), UCF Rising Knights Honor Band (2019), and UM Frost Honor Band (2020). Sadie participated on the LHS Varsity Cross Country team for three years and the Varsity Track and Field team for four years. She held the position of Captain of the Varsity Girls’ Cross Country Team, 2019 season and Captain of Varsity Girls’ Track and Field, 2020 season. In addition to her musical and athletic abilities, Sadie has been a barrel racer for nine years. She is a NBHA (National Barrel Horse Association) World Championships qualifier for the years of 2015 through 2020. Sadie is a member of the National Honor Society and has taken several college courses at Florida SouthWestern State College. She will attend Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas on a full tuition scholarship majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Sadie’s parents are Tom Gaskins, III and Jennifer Gaskins.

Yuliances Fernandez is a Top 5 Honor graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.784. She has completed 91.25 community service hours. Yuli is the Class of 2020 Senior Vice-President and a member of the National Honor Society. She has provided math tutoring at LHS for 2 years. Special recognitions awarded to Yuli are the Hendry County Sunshine State Scholar for 2019, and the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award. Yuli will be attending the University of Florida majoring in Microbiology and Cell Sciences. Yuli’s parents are Yael and Julio Fernandez.

Abel Cornejo-Jaramillo is a Top 5 honor graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.780. He has completed 61 community service hours. Abel is a dual enrolled student at Florida SouthWestern State College and will obtain his AA degree by the summer. He has participated in the Powerlifting Club (Freshman Year), Robotics Club at FSW (Junior Year), and the Biodiversity Club at FSW (Junior Year). As part of the Robotics Club, he held the leadership position of President. He will continue his education at Florida Gulf Coast University and major in Biology. Abel’s parent is Maria Jaramillo.

Marisabel Ortiz is a Top 5 honor graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.77. She has completed 76 community service hours. Marisabel participated in Soccer, Cross Country, and Track and Field. She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, and the Joy Mind Union Club- which she is the co-president of. Marisabel is the originator of the Joy Mind Union Club which focuses on normalizing talking about mental health and spreading positivity in the community. Other recognitions include A Honor Roll (2016-2017), AB Honor Roll (2017-2018), American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Participant (2019), and AP Scholar. Along with her high school diploma, Marisabel will receive her AA degree from Florida SouthWestern State College. She will continue her education at the University of South Florida and major in Biology. Marisabel’s parents are Edith and Ramiro Ortiz.
